Cross Structured Bookbinding with Kari Bronaugh

In this course, we will make a fun cover structure invented by the Spanish Bookbinder, Carmencho Arregui, who has been dubbed the "CSB". In this structure, the text block sewing is partially hidden by a two-piece soft cover that has straps that cross over the spine. The opportunities for mixing and matching cover materials and interlacing, sewing, or tucking the straps allows for a beautiful variety of cover designs. Also, students will learn a basic stitch for text block sewing - the French link stitch. The link stitch creates a hard wearing, secure textblock which is very useful in exposed sewing binding and is commonly used in fully cased-in or bound books. Students will create one book choosing either soft leather/suede or beautiful heavyweight handmade paper. The pages will be made from 98lb/160 gsm acid free Mixed Media Canson Paper which works well for marker, pastel, pencil, acrylic, watercolour, charcoal, pen and ink.
